What European Academies Do Differently, and How ONE FC Brings It to the US

Many of the best players in the world started in a European academy. Clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Juventus and Stade Rennais are known for developing young players. So what do they do differently? And can American families find the same approach close to home?

At ONE FC, we know these academies from the inside. Our founders came through them, played for them and won at the highest level. Today, we bring that experience to young players in Miami, Houston and Boston.

Our Founders Learned the Game in Europe's Top Academies

  • Blaise Matuidi trained at INF Clairefontaine, the national academy of the French Football Federation. Clairefontaine is widely seen as one of the finest academies in the world, and it has shaped great players such as Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappé. Matuidi went on to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France and to play for Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, two of the biggest clubs in Europe, before finishing his career at Inter Miami CF.
  • Kieran Gibbs came through the famous Arsenal academy in London. He played for Arsenal's first team from 2007 to 2017 and earned caps for England.
  • Sylvain Marveaux was trained at Stade Rennais, one of the most respected academies in France, before playing in Ligue 1 and the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Their careers show what a strong academy can do for a young player. Here is what they learned, and what we apply at ONE FC every day.

1. Development First, Results Second

European academies think in years, not weekends. Coaches care about how a 10 year old will play at 16 or 18, not only about this Saturday's score. Winning matters, but it is never the only goal.

At ONE FC, we follow the same idea. We measure success by how much each player improves over time.

2. Technique Comes First

In Europe, young players spend a lot of time on the ball. Training uses small sided games, many touches and tight spaces. This builds ball mastery, a clean first touch and confidence under pressure.

That is why ball mastery is at the center of our sessions, and why we use futsal to keep players on the ball all year. Learn more in our article on what futsal brings to youth player development.

3. Smart Players, Not Just Fast Players

Top academies teach players to think. Where is the space? When should I pass? When should I dribble? Players learn to scan, read the game and make good decisions quickly.

Our coaches build these habits from the youngest age groups.

4. One Method for Every Team

At clubs like Arsenal or Rennes, every age group plays with the same ideas. When a player moves up, they already know what is expected.

ONE FC works the same way. Our methodology is shared across all three academies and led by our Head of Methodology, Boubacar Kébé. A U9 player in Houston and a U15 player in Miami learn the same principles.

5. Coaches Who Teach

In European academies, coaches are teachers of the game. They plan every session with care and follow each player closely.

We are selective about who joins our staff. Every ONE FC coach is trained in our method and follows each player individually, season after season.

6. Character On and Off the Field

European academies expect discipline, respect and hard work. Players learn to handle mistakes, listen to their coaches and support their teammates.

At ONE FC, effort, attitude and respect matter just as much as talent.

7. A Clear Pathway

In Europe, young players can always see the next step, from the academy all the way to the first team. In the US, we build that pathway through strong competition:
